Apr 17, 2023 Episode 2
Nexus: Belonging Research Network

In this episode of the Nexus podcast, join us as we talk with Christine Vicera, a Filipino writer, researcher, and filmmaker based in Hong Kong. Christine is the founder of be/longing, an arts-for-education lab that utilizes storytelling to build a culture of inclusion in Hong Kong's diverse demographic.

We'll dive into Christine's experiences growing up in Hong Kong, including her education at a primary school with an institutional linguistic landscape that raises questions about the promotion of ethnocentrism, cultural stigmas, and pressure to conform. We'll also discuss the dangers of conformity to young children, the differences between adaptation and assimilation, and how it feels to be visibly "different." We'll also touch upon topics such as religious privilege, immigrant families and their relationship with religion, and how the economic benefits of English have affected generations of Filipinos in Hong Kong. Much of which will tie in to Christine’s personal life!

Tune in to listen to Christine's stories, insights, and perspectives on navigating assimilation, language, and religious identity through the power of storytelling.
