Redrawing Boundaries: Voices from the Frontlines of Hong Kong’s Advocacy for Inclusion
This episode features two special guests, Fermi Wong and Jeffrey Andrews, who share a commitment to making Hong Kong a home for both Chinese and non-Chinese locals alike. Fermi is the founder of Hong Kong Unison, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting racial equality and equal opportunities. With a focus on making Hong Kong's education system more accessible to ethnically diverse communities, Unison has achieved many milestones, including advocacy for school allocation, mainstream school availability, and a scholarship scheme for non-Chinese students. In this episode, we'll hear Fermi's origin story with Unison, how she dealt with the severe backlash from society for helping "outsiders," and the financial strain and stigma she faced along the way.
Our second guest, Jeffrey Andrews, is a social worker and football fanatic, who works as a manager/case worker for Christian Action’s Center for Refugees (CFR). As a third-generation Hong Konger of Indian descent, Jeff has a unique (insider) perspective on the educational landscape of Hong Kong, and his story provides the perfect groundwork for a discussion on the past, present, and future of education in Hong Kong.
As we get to know Fermi and Jeffrey better, we uncover the special bond that they share which is a story to inspire us all. Join us as we explore the struggles and triumphs of these two changemakers and their dedication to making Hong Kong a more inclusive and welcoming place for all.
